1st Try With Lenovo IdeaPad S10e

My first success with OS X was with a netbook, a Lenovo IdeaPad S10e, after I found a compatibility list on the net that contained a dozen known netbooks that could run Snow Leopard - more or less. The most famous at that time was a MSI Wind that needed nearly no modifications, others needed a new wireless card or other. I didn't like the MSI because the battery would hold just about 2h or so.
I mean, what will you do with a portable computer that runs just 2 hours max?

A Lenovo IdeaPad S10e: here still a virgin.
Anyway, after that I decided to buy the IdeaPad S10e because it had nice specs and looked good (at least did the colored models that were not as boring as the black/white ones). According to some users Ethernet was an issue but who needs Ethernet if the WiFi-card works?

And in fact, after a bumpy start I managed to install OSX 10.6 on the machine. The problems in the beginning were obviously with the external DVD-drive: I suspect the transfer rate was too slow or something.

Most important: You need an original retail DVD with Snow Leopard. You can order it online or buy it in an Apple Shop for about 29,- USD or 25,- Euros. A manipulated copy from the net will not work! Either because those were adjusted to special netbooks or they don't contain drivers. So just forget it, it's not worth downloading it.

To get the machine booting the installations disc it is imperative to make an image of the DVD - and therefore you need a real Macintosh computer. You can create the image (.dmg) with disc utility and transfer the image afterwards to an external hard disk or a USB stick with at least 8 GB.
Then you just change the booting order in the BIOS: USB (or ext. HD) first.
Then you are ready to go.

In the next article I will describe how to get things done right so that you can either install just OS X on the S10e or together with (Ubuntu) Linux and Windows XP/Windows 7.
